Tellaeche's iconographic repertoire is restricted exclusively to the world of the sea and its people---boats, masts, sails, piers, sailors and their families---depicted with a constructive rigour that is indebted to Cézanne and with large planes of vibrant colour, thereby updating traditional representations of marine subjects. Here the artist opposes the images of the lorry and the chimneys, typical of the industrial activities, to the romantic presence of the sails.

Having worked in his youth as a merchant seaman, Tellaeche initiated his artistic training in Madrid in the atelier of the painter Eduardo Chicharro and completed his studies after moving to Paris in 1902, where he was able to appreciate the work of Cézanne. Tellaeche's sojourns on the coast of Bizkaia brought him into contact with the artistic milieu of Bilbao, a connection that he strengthened early in 1911 when he settled in the city and opened his own photographic studio. His experience running the establishment enabled him to introduce certain photographic procedures into his pictorial oeuvre, such as the fragmented vision
and the subjective selection of frames, as is obvious in The Port. [Santiago Arcediano]
