Taking place at the museum on Tuesday 22 November was a performance by Esther Ferrer (born San Sebastián, 1937), one of the leading representatives of this form of artistic expression. For nearly an hour the audience engaged in a discussion based on a series of questions posed and shared by Ferrer on issues of gender and sex.

 


 

The Guest Work programme, sponsored by Fundación Banco Santander, concludes this year with an unusual event: a performance by Esther Ferrer (born San Sebastián, 1937), one of the leading representatives of this form of artistic expression.

The work will be filmed on video for subsequent dissemination.

BIOGRAPHY


Esther Ferrer (born San Sebastián, 1937) has engaged in artistic actions since the mid-1960s, either performing alone or as part of the ZAJ group (active until 1996).

In the early 1960s Ferrer and the painter José Antonio Sistiaga set up the first Free Expression Workshop, which would be the starting-point for many other parallel activities including an experimental school in Elorrio (Bizkaia).

In the mid-1970s Ferrer returned to visual art, producing manipulated photographs, installations, paintings based on the primary numbers series or Pi, objects, and more.

In 1999 she was one of two artists who represented Spain at the Venice Biennial. Ferrer was awarded the National Visual Arts Prize in 2008 and the Basque Government's Gure Artea Prize in 2012. In 2014 she received the MAV (Women in the Visual Arts) Prize, the Marie Claire Prize for Contemporary Art and the Velázquez Prize for Visual Arts.

Over the course of her lengthy career as a performance artist, Ferrer has participated in numerous festivals in Spain and abroad (including Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, France, Denmark, Norway, the UK, Belgium, Holland, Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Bulgaria, the USA, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Brazil, Thailand, Japan, Korea and Palestine).

Ferrer has exhibited her visual art in the following venues: Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, (Madrid), Galerie Donguy, Galerie Lara Vinci and Galerie Satelite (Paris), Galería Trayecto (Vitoria-Gasteiz), Staatsgalerie (Stuttgart, Germany), Koldo Mitxelena Kulturunea (San Sebastián), Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo (Seville), Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Roskilde (Museet for Samtidskunst) (Denmark), Círculo de Bellas Artes (Madrid), MOCA (Rome), Mexico City (Mexico), Museo de Bellas Artes de Río de Janeiro (Brazil), ARTIUM (Vitoria-Gasteiz), Es Baluard (Palma de Mallorca), Centro Cultural Georges Pompidou (Paris), CGAC (Centro Gallego de Arte Contemporáneo) (Santiago de Compostela), MAC/VAL (Musée d'art contemporain du Val-de-Marne) (Vitry-sur-Seine, France), and the CEART in Fuenlabrada (Madrid), among others.

Esther Ferrer has taught numerous courses at universities, museums and art schools in Canada, France, Italy, Mexico and Switzerland, as well as in Spain.
