Some of Quintín de Torre's production (the part concerned with the world of work, where he produced rounded interpretations of miners, stevedores and sailors, and recreated with remarkable verisimilitude the efforts of a worker concentrating on his job) has some relation with the contributions of the sculptor from Tarragona Julio Antonio, who produced a corpus of work close to the aesthetic tenets of the '98 group and Noucentisme. De Torre shares with Julio Antonio an interest in portraying human types of a sharp individuality, but so characteristic of a specific region that they might perfectly be considered "archetypes". The bust of a young Ship's Boy resuscitates one of the traditional characters of the Basque sea-going world, the cho, a subject also targeted by other Basque artists from the late 19th century on. The classicism of the figure, with a bronze-like polychrome, is accentuated by the restraint in insinuating movement and the concentrated effort of the work the lad has to do. [Miriam Alzuri]
