Masterpieces

This painting has a very worn signature in which only a trace of the name remains legible, with no remnant of the date. It must have undergone alterations during its time in France, but the literature kept repeating the transcription "Jusepe de Ribera de Spagnolet F. 1631", with the Gallic deformation of the nickname "Spagnoletto". The date was also altered, since judging from its style, I believe that it must date from around 1620-1623.

The crux of understanding the painting is its date, which must precede the year 1631 by a decade, the year that was believed to appear in the signature but was actually part of the manipulation it had undergone. In my opinion, the stylistic information matches a time between two certain bookends: later than the Calvary of Osuna (1618) and before the Drunken Silenus of Capodimonte (1626) (today I would say without a doubt that it must also predate the Virgin with Child Giving Saint Bruno the Rule, dating from 1624), and closer to 1618 than to 1624. This opinion is mostly shared by Pérez Sánchez and Spinosa, who have tentatively suggested that the date accompanying the signature, today vanished, might be 1621.

This Saint Sebastian Tended by the Holy Women boasts a monumental composition with three figures (plus the pair of flying cherubim carrying the crown and the palm frond of martyrdom) laid out in the space with no overlap. The body of the saint, half-hanging from the tree to which he is tied by one of his wrists, is a compositional motif that Ribera presents masterfully here, and one that he would continue to revisit tirelessly throughout his entire oeuvre in a host of variations in paintings and especially in drawings. The martyr's perfect anatomy forms a soft curve that diagonally bisects almost the entire foreground. A glistening blue cloak with sharp, highly uneven folds combines with the white of the loincloth in a beautiful central motif of fabrics. The widowed saint, Irene, who is unexpectedly youthful and extraordinarily beautiful, is seen in the action of removing the unguent with the "propriety and grace" that Francisco de los Santos so greatly admired. Though servile, her body is erect and her head even reaches the top edge of the painting; the large darkred mass of her clothing is aligned via the light vertical line of the flesh on her face and hands and the white scarf draped over her arm. Irene's companion or servant is the third figure, depicted in quarter-circle profile, closing the composition on the left with dull brown and green tones that highlight the hands removing the arrow with quiet assurance.
