Washerwomen in Arles was Gauguin's first painting to join a Spanish public collection. It was purchased by the Provincial Council of Bizkaia on the occasion of the 1st International Painting and Sculpture Exhibition held in Bilbao in 1919. At that show, 19 of the painter's works were displayed, 16 of them thanks to the mediation of his close friend and the executor of his collection after his departure to Polynesia, the sculptor Francisco Durrio.

This was not the first time that Durrio helped Gauguin's works appear in Bilbao: back in 1900, on the occasion of the first Modernist Art Exhibition, two paintings "belonging to Francisco Durrio" had been submitted, as well as a series of 13 engravings and 8 lithographs. However, in 1919 this work was listed as owned by the gallery of Eugène Druet, the owner of two other Gauguin paintings -two landscapes of Brittany- which could be seen in the Berástegui schools of Bilbao.

Washerwomen in Arles was painted during Gauguin's sojourn in the French town of Arles, where he had gone to work in the last quarter of 1888, summoned by Van Gogh, who was trying to assemble an artistic group. Rendered in December 1888 on a rough canvas that Gauguin had purchased in Arles, according to Wildenstein, the painting is the second of two works depicting washerwomen that Gauguin painted during this period, which he mentions in his personal notes. The piece embodies the painter's interest in prioritising expressive needs over mere formal representation, a concept that characterised some of the most important works he painted during this period, such as La Belle Angèle (Musée d'Orsay, Paris), The Yellow Christ and The Calvary (Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels), which signalled his permanent rupture with Impressionism. Outstanding features of this painting are the abstraction of its backgrounds, the impression of movement and photographic look, which led the painter to cut off the figure of the goat, which seems to be encroaching onto the scene. The distortion of the figures'shapes, along with their hieratic appearance, comes from the influence of the rough stone or wood statuary in Breton churches. The flat shapes with dark outlines and the zones of pure colour show his attempts to achieve a personal synthesis in which the complexity of the idea is expressed through the simplification of forms. This "Synthetism", a term coined by the artist himself, was characterised by the non-mimetic depiction of nature, the rejection of perspective through the abandonment of the third dimension, which was inspired by Japanese prints, and the separation of colour zones -large and flat, with strong contrasts which intensify the chromatic expressiveness- with a dark line. Émile Bernard dreamt up this system of colour compartmentalisation which he called Cloisonnism, whose origins lay in the stained-glass windows of mediaeval churches and enamels.

According to Wildenstein, this work was most likely completed in Gauguin's studio. What remains of it is a drawing of the head and torso of a goat (c. 1887-1889) similar to the one that appears in the painting, as well as a drawing in his notebook which was the basis of the standing woman. Later, Gauguin made a small watercolour version on silk, and in 1889 he made an inverted zincography of the work. Between 1888 and 1891, through works like this, the painter gradually abandoned the forms of naturalism while drawing from the works of Paul Cézanne and his much-admired Edgar Degas, and he became the main referent in what was called the School of Pont-Aven. These qualities led him to be considered the standard-bearer of post-Impressionism and the person charged with clearing the way for the artistic trends of the 20th-century avant-gardes such as Fauvism and Expressionism.
