• Order follows the same expressive lines. The pathetic theatricality of the arrangement of the figures and their gestures, their mural-like proportions (always to be found in Maeztu's work) and the scene's dramatic cover of darkness, which in this case also resounds in the planes further off with the Civil Guard's horseback search for delinquents along the banks of the river, make the picture a grandiloquent and yet effective social and political condemnation of the reality of Spanish provincial life at the time.
