The online collection and picture sale

In Conversation Piece, cum tiffin, Ucelay revives a kind of group portraiture habitual in 18th-century British painting, the conversation piece, which portrayed families or groups of friends enjoying some hobby or activity together, like music or hunting. In the first of these paintings, from left to right, the painters Jenaro Urrutia and Juan de Aranoa are portrayed in the garden of Ucelay's house in Busturia, near the coast not far from Bilbao. From the same generation of painters, and friends of his, Ucelay pictures them seated at a table with a large loaf, a cheese, a ceramic jar from Busturia, which bears the names of the two artists, and two glasses of cider, as if they had broken off from the tiffin the title of the painting refers to. In front of the table, on a wooden bench, a paint box refers to the profession of the two sitters. In the background, Ucelay portrays himself painting a large canvas, concentrating on the task of capturing the scene in the foreground, from which he does not exclude the elegant greyhounds walking around the garden.
